COMMERCIAL BUILDING - LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES - FOR SALE IN CRYSTAL FALLS, MICHIGAN! Crystal Falls is one of the two largest Cities in Iron County, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is at the Gateway to the western end of the Upper Peninsula, and the City is the Crossroads of the east-west traffic of US-2 and the north-south traffic of US-141. Located across from City Hall, on Superior Avenue/M-69, the building is on the main thoroughfare through the City! At the head, or western end, of Superior Avenue is the historic Iron County Court House built in 1890. The building being offered for sale has a prominent corner location (with North 4th Street) and there is a commanding view of the main street, and toward the eastern foot of Superior Avenue is the beautiful Paint River. Crystal Falls has it's roots in iron mining and logging booms which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Crystal Falls Iron Company mined millions of tons of iron ore in the area, transporting the ore to cities around the Great Lakes via the Chicago and North-Western Railroad. Several historic buildings that were built around this time period still remain in Crystal Falls. The building offered for sale, The Finnish & Swedish (F. & S.) Mercantile Association Store, is a two-story brick building, which was built in 1906 (some sources say 1908). The building was built of brick with a classical galvanized iron cornice at the roof line, and a simpler galvanized iron storefront cornice over the first floor. A grocery store was located on the first floor of the building and there were offices on the second floor. Built for a co-operative grocery and department store, it was collectively owned by local Finns and Swedes of the Mercantile Association. These Cooperative Associations began roughly the same time that character of immigration to the United States shifted towards a socialist perspective. The Finns and Swedes used consumer food cooperatives as a way to challenge the commercial monopolies and Company Stores. Members co-owned the stores and enjoyed substantial discounts in grocery prices. A placard located on the front of the building indicates its special significance, and is a historical reminder of the large Scandinavian population of Crystal Falls in the early 20th century. Today, the Lower Level tin ceiling, and much of the original woodwork is still intact. There is a dedicated entrance to the Upper Level on the side of the building. Along the front side of the Main Historic Building is a Second Storefront (332 Superior Avenue) with it's own separate entrance, and a 24x60 Stand Alone Brick Building (33 1/3 Fourth Street) located behind the main building. After mining and logging activities waned, Crystal Falls and other nearby towns turned toward the wonderful area tourism opportunities available during all four seasons! Parks, trails, forests, rivers, lakes, snowmobiling trails, fishing... Continued In Addendum
